Day 10, Tuesday, June 7, 2023
By Coach to Anchorage, with a stop at Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge
On Wednesday morning, travel day, we had a nice breakfast, served by our favorite waitress, Nadia, a college senior from Bulgaria. Then we set out down South Parks Highway toward Anchorage, where we would check into the Westmark Hotel for the night twenty-four hours before our redeye to Chicago O’Hare and the connection to Cleveland.
Along the Parks Highway, we saw an elk munching the grass by the side of the road, and a lot of beautiful mountain vistas. We stopped about two hours north of Anchorage at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, where we were able to get food and beverages and explore around the resort. Then on to Anchorage to the two hotels owned by Holland America. We stopped first at the Hotel Captain Cook, where about half the passengers disembarked, and then to the Westmark Hotel, where we would stay. The Westmark looked rather tired, and I hope Holland America will soon give the old gal a facelift. But the bed was comfortable. In my book, clean and comfortable is what counts. When we got into our room, we found our extra bag from the ship waiting for us. We had time for a short nap in the room, then looked at the two restaurants across the street, and chose Orso for our dinner. We both thought the food was good and the service excellent. Afterwards, we were ready for bed!
The next day would be our last in Alaska.
